ADJECTIVES

Adjective is a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe it.
Adjectives describe nouns by giving some information about an object’s color, origin, size, age, shape or material.
Some examples of adjectives are beautiful, easy, hard, different, Indonesian, young, blue, etc. 

Example:
·         It’s a round glass. (shape)
·         It’s a yellow dress. (color)
·         It’s a small paper. (size)
·         It’s an Indonesian dance. (origin)
·         It’s an ancient book. (age)
·         It’s a wooden table. (material)
·         It’s a beautiful house. (opinion)
·         It’s a broken mirror. (observation)

Adjectives Form in English
Some adjectives in English end with these suffixes:

  • -able/-ible  : adorable, invisible, responsible, uncomfortable
  • -al               : educational, gradual, illegal, nocturnal, viral
  • -an              : Indonesian, American
  • -ar              : cellular, popular, spectacular, vulgar
  • -ent            : intelligent, potent, silent, violent
  • -ful              : harmful, powerful, tasteful, thoughtful
  • -ic/-ical      : athletic, energetic, magical, scientific
  • -ine             : bovine, canine, equine, feminine, masculine
  • -ile              : agile, docile, fertile, virile
  • -ive             : informative, native, talkative
  • -less            : careless, endless, homeless, timeless
  • -ous            : cautious, dangerous, enormous, malodorous
  • -some         : awesome, handsome, lonesome, wholesome

Many adjectives also end with -y, -ary and -ate, but nouns, adverbs and verb have similar end with adjectives as well.
Example:
§  -y      : actually, friendly, daily, bouncy
§  -ary   : dreary, ordinary, weary
§  -ate   : accurate, irate, literate, separate

Adjectives describe the aspects of nouns. When an adjective is describing a noun, we say it is "modifying" it.
Adjectives can use to:

*      Express a judgment or a value
Examples
·         That was a good film.
·         English is fun.

*      Give nationality or origin
Examples
·         I heard a Korean song.
·         She is an Australian.

*      Describe feelings or qualities
Examples
·         It is a lovely dress.
·         They are smart students.

*      Tell us about age
Examples
·         He's an old man.
·         This lamp is ancient.

*      Tell us about size and measurement
Examples
·         Lia is a tall girl.
·         Her house is far away.

*      Tell more about a thing's characteristics
Examples
·         Lady Diana is beautiful.
·         The knife is sharp.

*      Tell us what something is made of
Examples
·         The table is wooden.
·         The dress is made from cotton material.

*      Tell us about shape
Examples
·         The earth is round.
·         The box is square.

*      Tell us about color
Examples
·         Sugie wore a blue shirt.
·         The banana is yellow.
